Jewish Involvement in the Spanish Civil War, 1936-1939

The Soviet Union attempted to communize Spain in the 1930s, but the heroic general Francisco Franco stopped them.

The Spanish Civil War is still important today. The reason that is so is because leftists and Marxists the world over are still angry about the outcome of that war. They wrongly believe that the anti-Franco faction in that conflict was fighting for "democracy" against "fascism."

Virtually all of the war waged in Spain from 1936-1939 was overseen by Soviet officials, including war waged by the volunteer "International Brigades." Non-combat actions in that war -- propaganda, sabotage, etc. -- were also overseen by the Soviets.

As you might imagine, Jewish involvement in the attempted communization of Spain was heavy, and that involvement is always understated by leftist historians who insist that 'only about 20% of the communists in Spain at that time were Jews.' True, if they refer to the top-ranking 20% of the anti-Franco faction and not to simple footsoldiers. However, since some Jews did not use their real names when they served in the Spanish Civil War it is difficult to say exactly how many Jews fought in Spain from 1936-1939.

The chief Soviet advisor who aided the communists in Spain was Jewish, General Grigori Stern. Another top advisor/commander with the anti-Franco Republicans was also Jewish, General Emilio Kleber, as was General Yakov V. Smushkevich, top Air Force advisor in Spain. The Republicans' economic advisor/commercial attache was also Jewish, Arthur Stashevsky.
